Installing a bunded fuel tank on your site is the safest way to store fuel and oil and helps to keep your work environment safe.
Where you place your bunded fuel tank is especially important and there are certain rules and regulations that you need to follow. Below we look at a few considerations for positioning your bunded fuel tank.
These tanks are engineered and manufactured in such a way that they are the safest option to store oil or fuel on-site as the bund which surrounds the outside of the storage tank provides additional protection against spillages or leaks.
Despite their high level of safety, you must follow certain rules and regulations.
Your bunded fuel tank must be positioned away from non-fire and hazardous goods as well as chemicals and they must be a good distance away from structures such as eaves, sheds, gazebos and boundary fencing.
You should not place your bunded fuel tank within 1.8m of any doors, windows or other construction openings. If you have oil-fired appliances on-site the tank should be located at least 1.8m away from their flue terminals.
Additionally, bunded fuel tanks must be located on a non-combustible base which covers an area that extends at least 300mm around the exterior of the tank.
Something else to bear in mind when it comes to positioning your bunded fuel tank is the access for delivery. Is there enough space for the tanker to get in and turn around?
These are the OFTEC fire regulations and must be considered when placing your bunded fuel tank on your site, failure to follow these regulations could result in a fine or even prosecution.
It’s important to note that these regulations are different in various parts of the UK, so it's best to check with the local council and authorities to make sure that you are compliant.
Following these rules and regulations will give you peace of mind that your bunded fuel tank is in a safe position, and that you will not face any legal issues when you are inspected.
